10 Reasons to Love San Diego’s Paradise Point Resort & Spa

by Shellie Bailey-Shah

I typically follow one rule when it comes to travel: the world’s a big place, so don’t repeat a destination. Over two decades of family travel, I’ve done a pretty good job adhering to this philosophy. But every once in a while, rules are meant to be broken. Enter San Diego.

My family and I started seeking San Diego sunshine when my oldest son was two years old; he’s now graduating from the University of San Diego. Over the years, we’ve visited nearly a dozen times — first for the amusements that appeal to the littles like LEGOLAND California and the San Diego Zoo, then for soccer and lacrosse tournaments, and eventually catering to our older teens with activities like surfing in front of the historic Hotel Del Coronado. We’ve stayed at accommodations up and down the coast, but my new favorite is Paradise Point Resort & Spa

Here are 10 reasons why I think your family will find your own paradise at this resort.

1. Location, location, location

Paradise Point Resort & Spa is located on Vacation Isle (yes, that’s literally the name of the island) in the center of Mission Bay. Connected by bridges to the mainland, it’s a 5-minute drive from SeaWorld San Diego or an easy bike ride to San Diego’s favorite beaches — Ocean, Mission and Pacific. That’s if you actually decide to leave. With 44 acres surrounded by water, no one would blame you if you decided to stay put!

KidTripster Tip: If you have younger children, pack a collapsible scooter. It’s a big property. Avoid complaints by giving your kids some wheels. You also can call the front desk to get golf cart transportation to anywhere on the property.

2. Bungalows for all

Bungalows at Paradise Point in San Diego

The resort features bungalow-style lodging with units varying in size and the number of bedrooms, plus a small dining area, kitchenette and living room. When you reserve, make sure to look at where your bungalow is located. If your family enjoys spending a lot of time poolside, consider a garden bungalow near the Main Pool. Personally, I loved our bungalow which was situated on the beach along Paradise Cove.

KidTripster Tip: While bungalows are equipped with small refrigerators and microwaves, they do not stock any dinnerware, glassware or silverware. You’ll want to pick up disposable supplies if you plan to eat in.

KidTripster Tip: Like other hotels in the area, Paradise Point does charge a resort fee of $36 per night, which includes high-speed WiFi, use of the five pools and fitness center, and recreational activities like tennis, basketball, mini golf, lawn games and kids’ crafts. That fee does not include parking, which is an additional $40 per night.

3. Pools galore

Paradise Point Resort & Spa has not one, not two… but five pools for guests to enjoy. The Main Pool is located in the heart of the resort and is popular with families. The Lagoon Pool features two fire pits, perfect for late-night swims and s’mores. In the same area, you’ll find the adult-only lagoon pool for ages 18 and up. The Meadow Pool is near Paradise Cove, and the Waterfall Pool has, you guessed it, waterfalls for a tropical vibe. Unlike other resorts that my family has stayed at, Paradise Point has very generous pool hours: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.

4. One mile of sandy shore

If you kids are longing for sandcastles and beach games, they won’t be disappointed along the sandy beach that wraps around the resort. However, it’s important to note that swimming isn’t recommended in Mission Bay. While we were there, signs warning about high bacteria levels were posted on the beach. If you’re looking to get in the ocean, head to one of the nearby beaches: Ocean, Mission or Pacific.

KidTripster Tip: Along the beach, you’ll find 14 public bonfire pits. Firewood is available at the resort’s Island Market. You also can buy pricey s’mores fixings or simply bring your own.

5. Kid-focused fun

A number of summer camp-like activities are included in your daily resort fee: seashell and rock painting, an island treasure hunt and a family bike tour. Plus, your family can borrow equipment for lawn games (cornhole, ping pong, lawn checkers), mini golf, basketball and tennis for free. Other activities like tie-dye classes, painting classes or skateboarding lessons involve an extra fee.

KidTripster Tip: At the front desk, scan the QR code to make advance reservations, especially during peak vacation periods.

6. Adult-focused relaxation

While the kids are busy, you may want to sneak away to The Spa at Paradise Point. Nestled in lush tropical foliage, indulge in an Island Body Buff, a CBD Glow Facial or Reiki full-body massage. Advanced reservations are encouraged.

Or, depending on the day of the week, try yoga, yoga with meditation, stand-up paddleboard yoga, yin and sound meditation, high-intensity boot camp, or the botanical garden tour — all included in your daily resort fee.

7. Water sports wonderland

It would be a shame to stay on Mission Bay and not get on the water. Paradise Point Resort & Spa makes it easy with its own on-site marina. While not included in your daily resort fee, you can rent kayaks, FunCats, stand-up paddleboards, Waverunners, sailboats and speedboats. You also can book waterskiing, wakeboarding or a party boat charter. See Action Sports Rentals for rates and reservations.

KidTripster Tip: Action Sports Rentals also offers skateboards, surreys, plus kid and adult bikes for rent. But remember, if the resort happens to be offering the Mission Bay Bike Tour during your stay, that ride is included in your daily resort fee, and there’s no need to rent bikes for the ride.

8. Dining with a view

Paradise Point Resort & Spa boasts two waterfront restaurants: Barefoot Bar & Grill and Tidal. The third restaurant, Topics Cantina, can be found at the Main Pool. Or stop in at Island Grinds Coffee, take your latte and pastry to go, and find your own spot on the beach.

9. Four-legged family members

Are you pet owners like us? It can be a real challenge to arrange for pet care while you’re on vacation. If you stay at Paradise Point Resort & Spa, your furry friend can come, too! Our labrador Java made the trip from Portland, Oregon to San Diego with us. He loved walking the property, which is beautifully landscaped and well-kept by the staff. The pet fee is $150/stay.

While I’m on the topic of staff, I want to compliment the employees at Paradise Point Resort & Spa. Let’s face it, American resorts are not typically known for the friendliness of their staff, but here, it was noticeable. From the valet to the front desk to the pool staff, everyone was extremely friendly.

10. Flash sales

Be on the lookout for last-minute flash sales on the Paradise Point Resort & Spa website. Right before our stay, I saw an offer meant to encourage families to drive to San Diego by helping to cover the cost of gas. If you booked by a certain date, the resort would give you a $100 credit to use on the property plus complimentary parking!

KidTripster Tip: In case you’re wondering, the resort does have on-site charging stations for those arriving in electric vehicles.
