Day 6: Return to the U.S.
We had one last hotel breakfast before heading to the airport. Our flight to the United Stated included a connection in Reykjavik.
KidTripster Tip: An efficient way to get from Oslo Airport to Oslo Central Station is via Flytoget Airport Express. Trains depart from inside the airport every 10 minutes, and arrive at Oslo City Center just 20 minutes later. You can purchase a ticket upon arrival. One way tickets cost about $25 for adults and $12 for youth and students. Kids under 16 ride free and can enter the train through an adorable rainbow bridge. The trains, whether Flytoget or the public train, are not only more affordable than taking a taxi or ride share, but also a faster way to get to/from the city.

With extra souvenirs in tow, we checked our bags in Oslo, and didn’t need to collect them in Reykjavik. They were transferred to our final destination.
The Sail and Rail Experience
While this itinerary covered a lot of ground, and included a relaxing overnight stay on-board a ship, we spent a significant amount of time in transit. If you’re looking to sightsee gorgeous Norway by window (train or ship), this is a low-key way to do it. It worked well for us, as we were traveling on a multi-generational trip with people of varying mobility and interests.

Because we arrived in Trondheim and Bergen in the late afternoon, it left little time for exploration of these interesting cities. If booking this itinerary, we recommend that you extend your stay in Oslo by a night or two on either side of the trip to allow more time to see the city. You could also consider staying an extra night in Bergen and taking the return train to Oslo a day later.
After booking our cruise, we received an itinerary from Hurtigruten. It included our hotel bookings and train tickets. Although coordinated by Hurtigruten, we were not part of any traveling group. We were on our own to follow the provided itinerary.
Our Rail and Sail package in the summer of 2025 cost about $1,300 a person. It did not include airfare, or the two extra nights we spent in Oslo on the front- and back-end of the trip.
We used our preferred travel advisors at Magic Family Getaways to book our Hurtigruten vacation. Their advisors are cruise travel experts and handle all of the booking details, at no extra cost to you. KidTripster receives a small referral commission for all bookings, but at no additional cost to you.
