Day 5: Train to Oslo

It was an early wake-up for us as our train out of Bergen departed at 8am. We grabbed a quick breakfast, then took a taxi to the train station.

Once on the Bergen Line train, we settled in for our seven hour journey. This trip is considered one of the most spectacular train rides in Europe. It crosses a national park, and travels through one of Europe’s largest mountain plateaus. The tracks were lined with lupine. We passed by turquoise colored lakes and through valleys carved from stone. We saw snow-capped mountains, and lone homes in the middle of seemingly nowhere. It’s a gorgeous, and relaxing way to get between the two cities.

Since we arrived back in Oslo in the late afternoon, we were unable to book our flights home to the U.S for that day, requiring an additional night’s stay in Oslo.

Accommodations in Oslo

We booked the Comfort Hotel Grand Central. This hotel was not arranged through Hurtigruten. It’s located at Oslo Central Station, and can be reached by walking through the train terminal. We had a large room, with simple, but modern furnishings. You guessed it, breakfast was included with our stay here!

Of the two Oslo hotels we stayed at, The Thon Hotel Opera is more upscale. The Comfort Hotel is more basic. Both are in a great location for getting to or from the airport, catching a train, or exploring the city. Restaurants and shops are easily accessible by foot.
