River cruising with kids has grown in popularity. Based on what I knew of river cruises, I wasn’t sure it would be the best vacation choice for families. Would it be too formal? Would it skew too old? Would the kids be bored?
My family had a chance to find out on a sailing aboard the A-ROSA SENA. My worries washed away as soon as we set sail. It turned out to be one of our favorite family vacations yet.

We sailed on the Rhine Experience Amsterdam & Rotterdam Itinerary out of Germany on one of A-ROSA’s family specific sailings. While kids are allowed on any cruise, this itinerary had special activities for kids and families. The SENA has cabins and spaces designed specifically for kids.

Our balcony on the SENA provided us a glimpse of life along the Rhine River. We sailed past farms, spotting cows and windmills, getting close enough to smell the grass. We sailed past beaches where summer campers had pitched tents along the shore, waving at us as we sailed by. Bicyclists were everywhere, pedaling along the river seemingly in the middle of nowhere. We also glimpsed industry, and the importance of this river on commerce in Europe. We sailed through several locks, an interesting thing to witness, requiring a skilled captain and crew.
